As you may have guessed from the "Mark sez" column, my recent struggle to figure out where to direct my gaming energies settled on Aquaria. It's quite an impressive game, it runs and looks great on the Mac, and I am kind of pleased by the lack of hand-holding -- other than telling you what the controls do, the game leaves it to you to work out how to interact with the things in the game world, and it's a real pleasure to work out for yourself how Naija's abilities and the contents of the world interact. (Although I have to admit that I ran in defeat to the forums to find out how to administer the final blow to the Mithalas Cathedral boss.)
If I had any complaints, it would be that the save point placement is a little sadistic, especially given the challenging formations of enemies and the occasional surprise boss fight. But the game is fun enough that just this one time, I honestly don't mind. ...Too much.
